I trust I won't offend anyone out there when I say that brass players are the Golden Retrievers of classical music (though further dog analogies might incur wrath). In my experience, brass players are the most approachable of musicians, and are often the most willing to play. The Chestnut Brass Company, a "traditional" quintet, plays fun and plays serious, but always well, on this CD of new quintet works written for them. The Chestnut Brass Company's sense of play is exploited in the final work, Brazen Cartographies by Eric Stokes (b. 1930). Through this four movement work, each apparently an oblique reference to a literary travel locale, Stokes employs a ragtime syncope and bluesy tonality." (Fanfare)
