Building your Hose-O-Phone

You will need:

  • plastic coupler
  • 8 feet of tubing
  • funnel
  • duct tape

Your local hardware store should have your needed supplies. The plastic coupler and the tubing is usually found in the plumbing section of the store. The funnel maybe found in the kitchen or the automotive section. It is important to match the diameter of the sizes of the different objects. The tubing needs to fit inside of the coupler and the funnel! If the tubing is too stiff, soften the tubing with warm water. The amount of tubing is perfect at the 8 feet length- lots of notes and not too much resistance when playing the instrument. It will also have you playing in the key of C, which may also be helpful. Use the duct tape to attached the parts together. This is VERY IMPORTANT, should you twirl the instrument, as seen by John in CBC concerts. Without the tape, the bell may fly off and break or hurt someone or something. DO decorate your Hose-O-Phone to personalize your instrument- make it special and have fun playing it. You may also substitute an old brass instrument mouthpiece for the coupler if you have one. The above parts should cost you under $5.00.
